2/24/18 Lecture by Andrew Macintosh

February 24, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

“Problems and Solutions in Translating the Psalms”

In the 1970’s Macintosh was asked to help a scholar create a new version of the Psalms in quality modern English. This endeavor turned out to require not only knowledge of the original Hebrew of the Psalms, but of its transmission through Greek, Latin and then fifteenth-century English. As in the well-known children’s game, a message whispered and passed from child to child around a circle, ends up surprisingly different from the original. Macintosh encountered just such problems, as well as those resulting from improvements in our knowledge of Hebrew and its Semitic background.

Macintosh will tell something of his experiences as a leader in this major project which was staffed by 8 internationally-known Hebraists and one scholar in the English language and literature.

Andrew Macintosh is Professor of Hebrew and Emeritus Dean at St. John’s College, Cambridge University, in England.
