Lecture title: “Tragic Lament”
For some time now there have been calls for the recovery of lament. Yet despite these, there appears to be a continuing lack of appreciation for the “costly loss of lament.” In this lecture, Dr. Villanueva will make the case that one of the reasons for the continuing loss of lament is due to a limited vision of worship, which only sees a movement to praise. To recover lament, we need a more encompassing vision of worship itself, one which sees a movement not only from lament to praise but also the opposite movement from praise to lament.
Dr. Federico G. Villanueva did his PhD research on the lament psalms at Trinity College, University of Bristol, U.K. He served as the General Editor of the Asia Bible Commentary Series, published by Langham Publishing in partnership with the Asia Theological Association. His book, It’s OK to Be Not OK: Preaching the Lament Psalms, has been translated into Filipino, Spanish, Chinese, and Bahasa Indonesia. He currently serves as the Asia Regional Commissioning Editor for Langham Publishing and Scholar Care Coordinator for current Langham scholars in Asia. Dr. Villanueva also teaches part-time at several schools: Ateneo de Manila University, Asia Graduate School of Theology, and Asian Theological Seminary.
