The Apostle Paul: 'No One Knows the Trouble I've Seen

Reading Romans through the lens of Paul’s pastoral grief over the response of his own people to the gospel about Jesus leads us to see this famous letter, not just as theological dogmatics or abstract concepts, but as a pastoral plea for unity among both Jewish and Gentile believers. To read Romans well we need to begin at the end—with Romans 14-15 especially—and then to see it as a plea from the anguished and groaning heart of Paul (Rom 8:22, 23, 26; 9:2).
